Biography

Dominic Vũ Đức Trạch came from Ngoại Bối in Nam Định and entered religious formation as a child. After theological study and ordination, he professed vows in the Dominican Order in 1825. A persistent illness affected his lungs. Even as his health weakened, he continued preaching, administering the sacraments, and encouraging Catholics who were also living under persecution.

Dominic's ministry required movement between hiding places, with little opportunity to protect his health. His final captivity ended in a death sentence after he refused to abandon Christianity. At the execution ground he knelt to pray before being beheaded in 1840. He was canonized in 1988.
