Biography

Dominic Mậu came from a poor farming family at Phú Nhai. His parents emphasized reliance on God while meeting the ordinary demands of household work. He entered the Dominican Order, made religious profession, and was ordained a priest in 1830. His subsequent ministry combined the duties of a friar with pastoral care of Vietnamese Catholics during increasingly severe restrictions.

Dominic's final captivity ended in a sentence carried out with other Catholic prisoners. Before execution he gave his companions sacramental assistance, and the group prayed together at the execution ground. He was beheaded at Hưng Yên in 1858. He was canonized by John Paul II in 1988.

What the recorded review covers

Individual Catholic institutional source review; original concise factual summary. AI-assisted institutional-source comparison; no qualified human review is claimed. Compared canonical and source names, aliases, clergy or lay status, family relationships and martyrdom details against all 685 baseline canonical or archived identities (625 published) and all prior directory batches. Holy See register number 48 is a distinct individual; source-name variants count as one person. The source index links Francis Xavier Hà Trọng Mậu to a duplicated priest biography. This entry instead cites the correct Dominic Mậu priest page and Vatican individual 48 (Dominican priest, 1858). The Hà Trọng family name remains unreliable and is withheld from display and searchable aliases. Vatican individual 75 is the separate Francis Xavier catechist, who died in 1839.
