Biography
David Lewis was a Welsh Jesuit priest remembered for decades of pastoral work in South Wales and particular care for people in poverty. After becoming Catholic, he studied in Rome, was ordained and entered the Jesuit novitiate in 1645. His return to Wales began a long period of local ministry.
That ministry was disrupted by the accusations surrounding Titus Oates's fabricated plot. Jesuits went into hiding as officials offered rewards for their capture. Lewis belongs to the Catholic martyrs of this persecution and died in 1679. The institutional account emphasizes his care for the poor as well as the dangers faced by Catholic clergy.
