Biography
Claudine Thévenet lived through the French Revolution in Lyon and witnessed the execution of two brothers. Their deaths deepened her commitment to forgiveness and to addressing the suffering around her. When André Coindre brought abandoned children to her, she took them into her care and began gathering companions for this work.
The Religious of Jesus and Mary developed from that service in 1818. Claudine's community provided children with practical skills, elementary education and religious formation, seeking a stable future rather than temporary relief alone. John Paul II canonized her in 1993. Her biography joins personal bereavement with a long-term educational response to social disruption.
