Biography

Charles Garnier was a French Jesuit missionary who persisted in seeking an overseas assignment despite opposition from his family. In New France he first studied the Huron language and worked at Ossossané. He later travelled with Isaac Jogues to the Petun people, where their reception was initially difficult.

Epidemic disease and suspicion of the missionaries complicated those early visits. Garnier returned several times before establishing two missions during the winter of 1647. His biography traces this patient, interrupted work rather than an effortless expansion. He died in 1649 and is honored as a saint in the Society of Jesus.
