Biography

Charles de Foucauld lost both parents in childhood and was raised by his grandfather. He pursued a military career, served in Algeria and later explored Morocco, publishing the results of that journey. Encounters with Muslim faith and help from his cousin and a Paris priest contributed to his return to Catholic practice in 1886.

He subsequently sought a life of prayer and poverty modeled on Jesus at Nazareth. His priestly vocation eventually brought him to the Sahara, where he studied Tuareg language and culture and lived among local people. He was killed in 1916. Communities later drew inspiration from his example, although he was not their founder in the strict sense. Francis canonized Charles de Foucauld in 2022.
