Biography
Charles Cho Shin-chol worked as a servant accompanying Korean envoys to Beijing and used his earnings to support his family. Augustine Yu Chin-gil and Paul Chong Ha-sang introduced him to Catholicism. He received baptism in Beijing and later assisted missionaries in Korea, including Father Maubant.
His work included accompanying missionary journeys and sometimes interpreting. When police arrested people in his household in 1839, Charles went to the authorities and was himself imprisoned. He refused to disclose information that would endanger other Catholics. After severe torture, he was executed in Seoul in September of that year.
