Biography
Catherine Volpicelli was a religious founder whose work in Naples combined devotion to the Sacred Heart with practical assistance to poor and sick people. She established the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart and sought forms of Christian service that responded to the needs of the society around her.
Her foundation placed care for people at the center of religious commitment, addressing bodily hardship alongside spiritual needs. She died in Naples in 1894 and is commemorated on December 28. John Paul II beatified her in 2001 and Benedict XVI canonized her in 2009. These dates also explain why older Martyrology notices may still use the title Blessed even though she is now recognized as a saint.
