Biography

Catherine of Bologna received a cultural and artistic education at the court of Ferrara before entering religious life. She joined a community of women and subsequently followed the Franciscan path that became a Poor Clare monastery. Her work included ordinary household service, the formation of novices and eventually leadership of a new monastery in Bologna.

Her spiritual writing, especially The Seven Spiritual Weapons, reflects the difficulties and commitments of contemplative life. She brought her earlier cultural education into the monastery while also undertaking its humbler tasks. Benedict XVI's account places her death in 1463; she was canonized by Clement XI in 1712. A conflicting year appears in another passage of the Catholic notice.
