Biography

Carolina Santocanale was raised in a prosperous family in Palermo and educated at home. Her father opposed her wish to become a nun, but she developed an active parish role directing a women’s association. Visits to Cinisi and the guidance of its parish priest helped her reconsider her desire for an enclosed life.

The needs of poor and sick neighbors instead drew her toward an active religious community. She began teaching catechism to girls and a young disabled person, while also coping with prolonged illness herself. Taking the name Maria di Gesù, she founded the Capuchin Sisters of the Immaculate of Lourdes to carry forward charitable service. Francis canonized Carolina Santocanale in 2022.
