Biography
Born Juana Josefa Cipitria y Barriola near Andoain, Cándida María came from a modest household and had little formal education or financial support. In Salamanca she founded the Daughters of Jesus in 1871 for the Christian formation of children and young people and the advancement of women.
The sisters opened schools for children from different social backgrounds and Sunday classes for working women and domestic servants. With Jesuit guidance she developed the congregation’s constitutions, drawing on the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola. She later traveled to Rome to secure papal approval, seeking lasting stability for the educational community she had begun. Benedict XVI canonized Cándida María de Jesús in 2010.
