Biography
Camilla grew up at her father’s court in Camerino, where she received an education in the arts and literature. Franciscan preaching encouraged her devotion to the Passion of Jesus. After a prolonged struggle over her vocation and resistance from her father, she entered the Poor Clares at Urbino in 1481 and took the name Battista.
She returned to Camerino with companions to establish a new Poor Clare community in a monastery her father provided. She became its abbess and helped develop other communities. Her autobiographical writings preserve her spiritual experiences and the sufferings associated with her religious life; those accounts are treated here as testimony rather than independent proof of extraordinary events. Benedict XVI canonized Camilla Battista da Varano in 2010.
