Biography
Born Giovanni Tolomei in Siena, Bernardo studied law and took part in a confraternity that helped people in hospital. Failing sight disrupted the possibility of a public career. In 1313 he and two companions withdrew to Accona, where prayer, reading Scripture, manual labor and silence shaped their shared life.
Others joined this community, which developed into the Olivetan branch of Benedictine monastic life. Bernardo helped establish its observance and served as abbot. During the plague of 1348 he went to be with the monks in Siena who had fallen ill, and died while attending to the afflicted community. Benedict XVI canonized Bernardo Tolomei in 2009.
