Biography
Bernard Vũ Văn Duệ was born at Quần Phương in Nam Định. His parents supported his early wish to enter church service and entrusted his education to Jesuit priests. He continued his preparation until ordination and spent his priestly life serving Catholics. By 1832 his age and recurring illness led his superiors to arrange retirement at Trung Lễ.
Even while retired, Bernard maintained contact with Bishop Ignacio Delgado and expressed a willingness to share the bishop's suffering during persecution. His own final captivity brought him into company with the Dominican priest Dominic Nguyễn Văn Hạnh. Both men were beheaded in the same execution in 1838. He was canonized in 1988.
