Biography

Bernard of Menthon served as a priest and archdeacon in the region of Aosta. His work is especially associated with people crossing the Alpine passes, where travel could expose pilgrims and other travelers to severe hardship. He established hospices and a religious community to care for them, giving hospitality a lasting institutional form.

The foundations became associated with the Alpine passes that bear his name. Their communities offered travelers practical assistance in a demanding mountain environment, joining hospitality with a stable religious vocation. His work as an archdeacon also involved the care of communities around Aosta. The chronology of his life remains disputed, with sharply different dates preserved in older accounts.
