Biography
Bernard of Corleone was born Filippo Latini and worked as a cobbler in Sicily. The Vatican's biography describes both his care for others and his readiness to fight. After badly injuring a challenger in a duel, he sought reconciliation; the injured man eventually became his friend. The source specifically cautions against reducing his early life to the popular image of a violent troublemaker.
He entered the Capuchins in 1631 and took the name Bernard. Religious life gave a different direction to his energy through community service and prayer. His final years were spent in Palermo. Canonized in 2001, he is an example of conversion that should be told with attention to the actual evidence rather than embellished into a dramatic criminal legend.
