Biography

Bernard Louis Beaulieu was a French seminarian whose interest in missions developed after meeting a priest who had served in China. Bereavement, illness and delays in obtaining permission complicated his plans. He eventually joined the Paris Foreign Missions Society, was ordained in 1864 and departed for Korea.

After arriving in 1865, Beaulieu lived in a mountain community, learning Korean and encouraging nearby missionaries. Bishop Berneux planned a new assignment for him, but he was arrested before leaving. He was tortured and executed at Saenamteo in March 1866. His biography distinguishes a short period of Korean ministry from the longer years of preparation that preceded it.
