Biography

Benedicta Hyon Kyong-nyon supported herself by sewing after her husband's death. She used her earnings to assist others, taught people who could not read, cared for the sick, and welcomed Catholics preparing to receive the sacraments. She became a catechist in a family already marked by persecution.

Her brother Charles Hyon helped the missionaries, and interrogators sought information about him after Benedicta's arrest. She refused to surrender that information or her faith despite severe mistreatment. She was executed outside Seoul's Small West Gate in December 1839. The bishops' biography also records an encouraging prison letter, while noting that the letter itself has not survived.
