Biography
Benedict Menni was born Angelo Ercole Menni in Milan. He left bank employment over a matter of conscience and helped carry soldiers wounded at the Battle of Magenta. These experiences preceded his entry into the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God, where nursing and priestly formation brought together the two central commitments of his life.
Sent to Spain in 1867, he worked to restore the order's hospital ministry after political upheaval. He also founded the Hospitaller Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, extending organized care for people in need. His life joins concrete medical service with the patient task of rebuilding institutions. The Vatican's canonization index records his recognition as a saint in 1999.
