Biography

Bathildis was an Anglo-Saxon woman who had been enslaved before becoming the wife of Clovis II and queen of the Franks. After his death she served as regent. The Catholic account connects her rule with support for monasteries and efforts against enslavement, while also describing the political pressures that eventually removed her from public government.

She spent her later years in the religious community at Chelles, taking part in ordinary work and caring for sick people. The transition from governing a kingdom to communal religious life formed an important part of her memory. She died there in 680, remembered both for her support of monastic foundations and her own observance within one of them.
