Biography

Barbara Yi Chong-hui was a daughter of Magdalene Ho Kye-im and sister of Magdalene Yi Yong-hui. She resisted a proposed marriage to a man who was not Catholic and later married a Catholic. Widowed after two years, she eventually moved to Seoul and lived with her aunt, Theresa Yi Mae-im.

Her sister joined the same household. Barbara was arrested during the 1839 persecution and endured torture without abandoning her beliefs. She was executed in Seoul in September. Her niece Barbara Yi, who died earlier in prison, was another member of this family and is a distinct saint.
