Biography
Barbara Kim came from a poor Catholic household and entered domestic service while young. Living with a devout Catholic family strengthened her religious commitment. She later married a man who did not share her faith, and differences over religion troubled their family life.
After her husband died, Barbara devoted herself to prayer and charitable work. Arrested in 1839, she refused to renounce Catholicism or reveal other believers' names. Torture, hunger and disease marked her imprisonment, and she died of fever in a Seoul prison that year. The bishops' biography records her canonization in 1984.
