Biography

Austremonius, also called Stremonius, is remembered as the first bishop of Clermont and an early evangelizer of Auvergne. His cult became associated with churches and relics at places including Issoire and Mozac. Gregory of Tours included him in the tradition of missionary bishops sent into Gaul.

The date and circumstances of that mission have been interpreted differently, and later accounts of martyrdom are not a secure contemporary record. Catholic diocesan material cited by Nominis places the beginnings of his episcopate around the end of the third century. November 1 appears as a commemoration, while the local diocesan proper also uses November 3. Neither observance replaces the universal solemnity of All Saints.
