Biography
Augustine Yu Chin-gil was an interpreter whose religious inquiry led him from reading Korean and Chinese philosophical traditions to Catholic writings. He traveled to Beijing with Paul Chong Ha-sang and received baptism there. Together they sought priests for the Catholic communities in Korea.
Back in Korea, Augustine helped support missionary activity and shared his faith with others. Arrested in 1839, he acknowledged his own role but refused to identify fellow Catholic leaders. He was executed in Seoul that September. His son Peter Yu Tae-chol also became a martyr; father and son have separate entries in the Korean bishops' collection.
