Biography
Augustine Phan Viết Huy came from Hạ Linh in Nam Định and served as a soldier. Earlier formation in a priest's household had given him knowledge of Christian teaching, although his adult life included serious failings. During the persecution of Catholic soldiers, he endured punishment with Nicholas Thể and Dominic Đạt. After initially renouncing his faith, he repented and sought sacramental reconciliation.
Augustine and Nicholas traveled to Huế to withdraw their renunciation before the authorities. They submitted petitions and eventually presented themselves when the ruler passed by. Their refusal to accept further offers of release led to death sentences. Augustine was executed at sea in 1839. He was canonized in 1988.
