Biography
Augustine Pak Chong-won was a Seoul Catholic known for teaching, charitable work and a gentle manner. Married to Barbara Ko Sun-i, he helped people prepare for baptism and supported efforts to bring missionaries into Korea. Bishop Imbert appointed him a catechist, recognizing his ability to serve the community.
During the persecution of 1839, Augustine continued assisting Catholics, particularly those in prison, until his own arrest in October. He remained faithful despite repeated torture and was executed at Tangkogae in January 1840. His wife had been executed the previous month. Their separate lives show how household responsibilities and lay leadership supported the early Korean Church.
