Biography

Artemide Zatti worked as a child laborer in Italy before his family emigrated to Argentina because of poverty. At Bahía Blanca he worked in a hotel and a brick factory and encountered the Salesians through parish life. He sought to join them but contracted tuberculosis while caring for a sick priest and moved to Viedma.

After recovering, he became a Salesian lay brother and devoted himself to the hospital there. He qualified to dispense medicines and later assumed administrative responsibilities while nursing patients. His care also extended beyond the hospital through visits around Viedma and nearby Patagones, often carrying medicines by bicycle to those unable to reach him. Francis canonized Artemide Zatti in 2022.
