Biography

Antônio Galvão grew up in Guaratinguetá and studied at a Jesuit college in Bahia. He later entered the Franciscans, professed vows in 1761 and was ordained the following year. In São Paulo he served as a preacher, confessor and porter, meeting people who sought spiritual guidance and traveling to those unable to reach him.

He helped establish a new religious house for women in 1774 and continued supporting the community after its first superior died. The work developed into the Monastery of the Light. Galvão directed construction and took part in the labor himself, linking spiritual guidance with the practical responsibility of sustaining a community. Benedict XVI canonized Antônio de Sant’Anna Galvão in 2007.
