Biography
Anselm of Lucca was connected with Mantua and became bishop of Lucca during the period of conflict over secular involvement in ecclesiastical appointments. He supported the reforming papacy and sought communal discipline among his cathedral clergy. Those efforts met resistance and ultimately led to his expulsion from the see.
He was associated with Benedictine life and later served as a papal representative in Lombardy. His support for Gregory VII continued after his expulsion from Lucca. He died at Mantua in 1086. The two place names refer to the same bishop, whose reforming commitments linked monastic observance with the wider conflict over ecclesiastical appointments.
