Biography

Angela of the Cross grew up in Seville and worked in a shoemaking workshop. Poor health prevented her from continuing in two established religious communities. With guidance from a priest, she instead served people affected by cholera and gradually discerned a form of community life closely connected to the needs of the city's poor.

In 1875 three women joined her in a rented room, beginning the Sisters of the Company of the Cross. They visited sick and dying people in their homes and returned to a household centered on prayer and silence. Her foundation joined contemplative practice with readiness to respond to immediate need. She died in 1932 and was canonized in 2003.
