Biography
Angela of Foligno was married and had children before a period of personal conversion transformed her life. Following the deaths of her mother, husband and children, she sold her possessions and distributed the proceeds to poor people. She visited Assisi and entered the Franciscan Third Order in 1291.
The friar Arnaldo became her spiritual guide and recorded her experiences in the Memorial. These writings describe prayer and mystical experience from within her religious life; they are not independent verification of extraordinary events. Alongside prayer she cared for sick people and those with leprosy. Her longstanding Catholic recognition was extended through equivalent canonization. Francis canonized Angela of Foligno in 2013.
