Biography

Andrew Nguyễn Kim Thông belonged to Gò Thị in Bình Định and was widely known as Năm Thuông. A married father in a prosperous household, he held responsibilities in village government and the local church. Bishop Cuenot entrusted him with leadership among Catholics throughout the district. Andrew supported orphanages and the Sisters of the Lovers of the Holy Cross, and welcomed clergy seeking refuge.

A grandson reported Andrew to officials, leading to imprisonment. He refused advice to make a private gesture of renunciation and then resume his faith at home. Sentenced to exile in the south, he undertook the journey in chains and died in 1855. He was canonized in 1988.
