Biography
Andrew Chong Hwa-gyong left a wealthy Catholic household for Seoul, where he tried to assist the Church. During the persecution he was deceived by claims that officials wanted to become Catholic. His cooperation unintentionally exposed Bishop Imbert and other believers to arrest.
When Andrew understood the deception, he refused further demands for information and warned the remaining missionaries to escape. He confessed his wrongdoing and was eventually arrested himself. He maintained his faith under violent interrogation and was strangled in January 1840. The bishops' account preserves his mistake and subsequent change of course rather than presenting an uncomplicated heroic life.
