Biography

Andrew Bobola was a Polish Jesuit priest whose ministry included preaching, catechesis and organizing lay groups to serve prisoners and children. After studying in Vilnius, he worked in several communities in a region where political conflict and religious divisions frequently overlapped.

During outbreaks of plague he and his collaborators cared for those affected. His later ministry brought him to Pinsk during war between regional powers. Captured by Cossacks in 1657, he refused to abandon his Catholic faith and was killed. The Jesuit account identifies him as a saint and martyr.
