Biography

Amato Ronconi came from Saludecio near Rimini. After his parents died he was raised by his brother, but later left that household rather than accept an arranged marriage. His sister Chiara joined him at their family property, where he established a hospital dedicated to caring for poor pilgrims and supported it through agricultural labor.

He made repeated pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela and became associated with the Franciscan Third Order. In 1292 he transferred the hospital and his possessions to a Benedictine monastery, requesting acceptance as an oblate. His death date remains uncertain in the source; the continuing care institution is more securely documented than the later devotional chronology. Francis canonized Amato Ronconi in 2014.
