Biography
Alphonsus Rodriguez was a Spanish Jesuit brother whose best-known work was welcoming people at the college of Montesión in Palma, Majorca. Before entering religious life, he managed a family business and married. The deaths of his wife and children, followed by business difficulties, preceded his renewed search for a religious vocation.
As the college's doorkeeper he received visitors, delivered messages and helped people seeking assistance. Students also approached him for advice and prayer. He became a friend and mentor to Peter Claver, encouraging his interest in overseas missions. His spiritual notes became known after his death in 1617.
