St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori

Alphonsus Maria de Liguori was born in 1696 in Marianella, near Naples, into a noble Italian family. His father, Don Giuseppe de Liguori, was a naval officer and captain of the Royal Galleys, while his mother came from a prominent family as well. From a young age, Alphonsus displayed remarkable intellectual gifts. He earned a doctorate in both civil and canon law at the age of sixteen, one of the youngest to achieve this distinction, and for nearly a decade he practiced law successfully in the Neapolitan courts.

A pivotal moment came in 1723 when, after losing an important court case he had prepared meticulously, Alphonsus felt a profound calling to leave behind his legal career and worldly ambitions. He devoted himself to the spiritual life and was ordained a priest in 1726. His early ministry focused on the rural poor and abandoned souls of the Kingdom of Naples, particularly in the hinterlands where priests rarely visited. This work of evangelization among the neglected became the driving force of his vocation.

In 1732, Alphonsus founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly known as the Redemptorists, at Scala. The community was dedicated to preaching the Gospel to the poor and most abandoned, following the example of Christ the Redeemer. He also established a corresponding community of sisters. The Redemptorists grew steadily, and Alphonsus served as their superior general, guiding the young order through internal difficulties and external opposition. In 1762, against his wishes, he was appointed Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti, a diocese he led with tireless pastoral devotion for thirteen years before resigning due to declining health and disagreements with his chapter.

Alphonsus was a remarkably prolific writer. His masterwork, the monumental moral theology treatise Theologia Moralis, shaped Catholic ethical thought for generations. He also wrote devotional classics, including The Glories of Mary, a beloved treatise on the Blessed Virgin, along with sermons, ascetical works, and other devotional writings. He was additionally a talented musician and composer, contributing hymns that remain part of Catholic liturgical tradition. He is widely recognized as a primary defender of the Equiprobabilist system in moral theology, and his rigor and clarity made his works standard texts in seminaries for over a century.

The final years of Alphonsus's life were marked by intense suffering. He endured scruples, temptations against faith, and the loss of his sight. He died on August 1, 1787, at the age of ninety, at Nocera dei Pagani. He was canonized in 1839 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1871, one of the few moral theologians to receive this honor. He is venerated as a model of pastoral care and a patron of confessors, theologians, moralists, cancer patients, and those suffering from arthritis, the latter reportedly connected to the ailments he bore in his later years. His feast day is celebrated on October 30.
