Biography

Alberic followed Robert to Molesme and then joined the foundation at Citeaux in 1098. After Robert returned to Molesme, Alberic became the second abbot of the new community. His responsibilities included securing papal protection, helping establish its independent form of life and attending to the practical needs of the monastery.

His leadership was associated with manuscript work and the relocation of the monastery when the original site lacked sufficient water. Papal protection helped establish the independence of the new foundation from Molesme. He was remembered for care of both the rule and the brothers. The different years given for his death reflect differing medieval ways of reckoning the beginning of a year.
