Biography

Born Livia Pietrantoni in a large farming family in Pozzaglia Sabina, Agostina knew demanding manual work from childhood. She helped support her family and later worked in the olive harvest, where the Vatican's biography describes her concern for younger companions and resistance to exploitative employers. Her desire for religious life included a willingness to undertake difficult service.

She entered the Sisters of Charity of Saint Jeanne-Antide Thouret in Rome in 1886 and became a nurse. A patient killed her in 1894; the institutional account describes her forgiveness of her attacker. Her story deserves attention to the everyday care that preceded her death, as well as to her martyrdom. She was canonized in 1999.
