Biography

Agatha Yi was imprisoned as a teenager with her father Augustine Yi Kwang-hon and mother Barbara Kwon Hui during the persecution of 1839. Guards tried threats, violence and false reports that her parents had abandoned their religion. She continued to profess her own faith rather than accept those claims.

Agatha endured hunger, illness and repeated interrogation through many months of confinement. Her parents were executed earlier in the persecution, but she remained in prison until she was strangled in January 1840. The Korean bishops' individual entry distinguishes her from the other martyrs named Agatha Yi, including Agatha Yi So-sa and Agatha Yi Kyong-i.
