Biography

Veronica Giuliani was born Ursula at Mercatello in Italy and entered the monastery at Citta di Castello in 1677. She took the name Veronica and made her religious profession the following year. In 1716 she became abbess. Her long monastic life combined responsibility for the community with prayer shaped by the Passion of Christ.

Her extensive spiritual diary preserves testimony about her inner life and devotion to the Passion. She offered prayer for the pope, clergy and poor people as part of her commitment to the Church. Her responsibilities as abbess continued alongside that contemplative life. She died in 1727 and was canonized by Gregory XVI in 1839.
