Biography
Thomas of Villanova received a university education and entered the Augustinian order. He became a religious superior before taking on episcopal responsibilities. The Catholic account remembers his concern that prayer and communal worship remain central to religious life, alongside the learning that formed part of his own vocation.
As bishop at Valencia he became particularly known for assistance to poor people, using the resources of his office for their needs. His ascetical and spiritual writings also formed part of his religious legacy. He died in 1555 and was canonized in 1658, remembered for an episcopal life that carried his earlier Augustinian commitments into practical pastoral care.
