Biography

Stephen Harding was an Englishman whose travels brought him to the monastery of Molesme in Burgundy. In 1098 he joined the group that left Molesme to establish Citeaux. He later became abbot there, helping the new community develop a shared pattern of monastic life rather than remaining an isolated experiment.

He received Bernard and his companions, organized lay brothers and linked new foundations through the Charter of Charity. That framework sought unity of rule and practice across the growing family of monasteries. He died in 1134. His work continued the foundation begun with Robert of Molesme and Alberic while giving the expanding order durable forms of cooperation.
