St. Stanley Rother

Stanley Francis Rother was born on March 27, 1935, in Okarche, Oklahoma, the eldest of five children in a farming family of German and Czech descent. He grew up attending Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the same parish where he would one day be baptized, ordained, and eventually celebrated as a hometown hero. Rother struggled academically in high school and left briefly for a welding program, but his deepening sense of a religious vocation eventually led him to apply to Saint John's Seminary in Little Rock, Arkansas, and later to Mount Saint Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland, where he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Oklahoma City and Tulsa in 1963.

In 1968, after several years of parish work in Oklahoma, Father Rother volunteered to serve at a mission in Santiago Atitlán, a Tz'utujil Maya community in the Guatemalan highlands. He quickly learned Spanish and began working on a Tz'utujil dictionary and portions of a New Testament translation. Over the next thirteen years he ministered to the local people, helped build a hospital, and became deeply attached to the community, which affectionately called him 'Padre Apla's' (Father Stanley). When Guatemala's civil war intensified in the late 1970s, the indigenous population of the highlands was targeted by government death squads. Parishioners, catechists, and other Church workers were killed, and several of Rother's own coworkers were murdered.

Rother returned to Oklahoma in early 1981, believing the danger had become too great. He was named to the diocesan Mission Office, but within months he made the decision to go back to his people in Santiago Atitlán, writing that the shepherd could not abandon his flock. On July 28, 1981, gunmen entered the rectory and shot him to death. He was the first U.S. priest to be martyred while serving on foreign soil.

His body was returned to Oklahoma for burial, where thousands lined the streets. In 2015, Pope Francis recognized Rother as a martyr, and on September 23, 2017, he was beatified in Oklahoma City. The cause for his canonization continues, and devotion to him has grown among Catholics, especially those connected to missionary work, indigenous ministry, and the persecuted Church.

Some details of his life, including the exact circumstances of his death, remain subjects of historical research, and not every claim from popular accounts has been fully verified. What is certain is that Stanley Rother gave his life for a community he loved, and his witness has left a lasting imprint on the Church in the Americas.
