St. Solanus Casey

Solanus Casey was born Bernard Francis Casey on November 25, 1870, on a farm near Oak Grove in Prescott, Wisconsin. He was the sixth of sixteen children born to Irish immigrant parents, James and Margaret (née Early) Casey. Growing up in a large, devout Catholic family during the rugged homesteading years of the upper Midwest shaped his early sense of faith and hard work. The family later moved to several other Wisconsin communities, and young Bernard worked on the family farm and in various manual jobs, including time spent as a logger, a hospital orderly, and a prison guard.

Seeking a path to religious life, Bernard entered the seminary but was not advanced to ordination due to academic limitations. He was instead accepted by the Capuchin Franciscan Province of St. Joseph in Detroit and was given the religious name Solanus, a form of the Irish name Solamh, by which he would become known. He was ordained a priest on July 24, 1897, though with the restriction that he could not preach or hear confessions publicly because of his limited academic preparation — a circumstance he accepted with remarkable humility.

Despite these restrictions, Father Solanus served as a porter at various Capuchin friaries, most famously at St. Bonaventure Monastery in Detroit, where he greeted visitors for roughly twenty years beginning in 1924. It was in this humble role that his spiritual gifts reportedly flourished. He became known for offering counsel, praying over the sick, and reportedly bringing comfort to thousands who came seeking healing or peace. He had a particular devotion to Our Lady of the Poor, a reported Marian apparition from the Rue du Bac visions, and he founded the Solanus Casey Auxiliary in 1928 to support the work of St. Bonaventure and to pray for the sick.

Father Solanus also founded Capuchin Soup Kitchen initiatives in Detroit to feed the hungry during the Great Depression and beyond. He served briefly at St. Felix Friary in Huntington, Indiana, and in other communities, always in roles of service rather than public ministry. He suffered increasing ill health in his later years and was cared for by his fellow friars. He died on July 31, 1958, at St. Bonaventure Monastery, having reportedly offered his sufferings for the conversion of sinners and the healing of the sick. He was buried at St. Bonaventure, and his tomb has since become a place of pilgrimage.

Father Solanus was declared Venerable in 1995, beatified by Pope Francis on November 18, 2017, after the healing of a man with a chronic skin condition was attributed to his intercession. The canonization process continues to advance, with attention given to the case of a young man in Panama who was reportedly healed of a fatal skin disease. The Solanus Casey Center in Detroit draws pilgrims from across the country, and his memory remains especially strong in the Midwest, in Capuchin communities, and among those devoted to healing and to the poor.

His life has often been summarized in a phrase associated with him: in the face of obscurity, suffering, and the limits placed on his ministry, he reportedly told a fellow friar to 'thank God ahead of time.' That attitude of patient trust, combined with his reputation for healing and his decades of service to the needy in Detroit, is the heart of his legacy as one of the most beloved American Catholic figures of the twentieth century.
