Biography

Sabas was born in Cappadocia and moved to the region of Jerusalem as a young man. Before following a solitary way of life, he received formation in a monastic community associated with Euthymius and Theoctistus. Other monks later gathered around him, leading to the development of the Great Lavra in the Judean desert.

His work brought individual hermits together under common spiritual leadership while retaining room for solitude. He also defended the teaching of the Council of Chalcedon during disputes that affected his communities. Catholic sources remember him on December 5. They give differing death years around 531–532, so this entry retains that uncertainty rather than making the exact date central to his legacy.
