Biography

Robert of Molesme entered Benedictine life in Burgundy and held leadership responsibilities before gathering a community at Molesme. The Catholic account describes his continuing concern that material success could weaken monastic discipline. In 1098 he and a group of companions moved to Citeaux to seek a more demanding communal observance.

That foundation became the beginning of the Cistercian order. Robert subsequently returned to Molesme when directed to do so, while Alberic and Stephen Harding continued the work at Citeaux. He remained responsible for the earlier community until his death in 1110. His career illustrates how the establishment of a new religious observance also involved obligations to an existing monastery.
