Biography

Raphael Kalinowski, baptized Joseph, trained as a military engineer and taught mathematics before joining the Polish uprising of 1863. Arrested by Russian authorities, he was sentenced to hard labor in Siberia. During exile he assisted companions materially and encouraged prayer and hope.

After release he worked as a tutor, then entered the Discalced Carmelites and took the name Raphael of Saint Joseph. Ordained in 1882, he devoted himself to confession, religious formation and the life of Carmelite communities. He died at Wadowice in 1907 and was canonized in 1991. His path to priesthood followed education, political conflict, imprisonment and service.
