Biography

Rafael Arnáiz Barón grew up in Burgos and Oviedo and later studied architecture in Madrid. He enjoyed drawing, music and friendships while maintaining regular Eucharistic prayer. Visits to the Trappist monastery of San Isidro de Dueñas drew him toward contemplative life, and in January 1934 he entered the community.

Severe diabetes soon forced him to return to his family for treatment. His illness repeatedly interrupted monastic life, but he continued returning when able, accepting a vocation shaped by physical weakness rather than a straightforward progression through formation. He died in 1938; the institutional biography emphasizes perseverance and trust during these disrupted years. Benedict XVI canonized Rafael Arnáiz Barón in 2009.
