Biography

Peter Nguyễn Văn Tự was born at Ninh Cường in Nam Định and entered formation in the Catholic mission of Eastern Tonkin. After ordination he joined the Dominican Order, making his profession in 1827. His ministry continued for years despite the need to hide. Witnesses consulted for his cause described a priest attentive to prayer and to the practical needs of other people.

In 1838 Peter was assigned to Đức Trai, also called Kẻ Mốt, in Bắc Ninh. A Catholic informer helped bring about his capture. His imprisonment overlapped with that of the physician and community leader Joseph Hoàng Lương Cảnh. Peter refused renunciation and died that year. He was canonized in 1988.
